Bank statements for PIP
PIP is not means-tested — your savings and income do not affect your entitlement. DWP does not routinely ask for bank statements as part of a PIP assessment. Here is when they might, and what to do if you receive a request.
PIP vs means-tested benefits: the key difference
| Benefit | Means-tested? |
|---|---|
| PIP (Personal Independence Payment) | No |
| Universal Credit | Yes |
| Council Tax Reduction | Yes |
| Housing Benefit (legacy) | Yes |
| Pension Credit | Yes |
| Attendance Allowance | No |
| Carer's Allowance | Partially |
PIP and Attendance Allowance are disability benefits based on need, not finances. All other major working-age benefits are means-tested.
When DWP might ask for bank statements on a PIP claim
Fraud compliance review
DWP's Fraud Investigation Service conducts periodic compliance checks across claimants receiving multiple benefits. Your PIP claim may be reviewed alongside other benefits, and bank statements can be requested as part of the wider check.
Lifestyle inconsistency concern
If DWP receives a tip-off or data suggests your spending or activity is inconsistent with your claimed limitations — for example, regular spending at locations requiring significant mobility — they may investigate. Bank statements could be part of that investigation.
Claim review or reassessment
During a PIP review (which happens periodically), DWP may request supporting evidence. While this usually focuses on medical evidence, financial records can be requested if other aspects of the claim are under scrutiny.
Concurrent means-tested benefit check
If you also receive Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, or Council Tax Reduction, those benefits are subject to financial checks. DWP may review all your claims together, making it appear that bank statements were requested 'for PIP' when they were actually required for the means-tested claim.
What to do if DWP requests your bank statements
Read the letter carefully
The letter will specify which benefit the check relates to, which accounts are required, and the time period. Check whether the request is linked to PIP specifically or to another benefit you claim.
Provide the requested statements in full
Download statements for the specified period from your online banking. Provide all requested accounts — omitting accounts is treated as non-disclosure. Digital PDFs are accepted.
Include a cover letter for anything unusual
Large one-off deposits, transfers from family, or irregular income patterns should be explained briefly in a cover letter. Proactive explanations are treated better than those extracted during investigation.
If you need help, contact Citizens Advice
Citizens Advice and disability charities (Scope, Mind, Disability Rights UK) can help you respond to compliance requests. If you believe the request is inappropriate, a benefits adviser can challenge it.
Claiming other benefits alongside PIP
Many PIP claimants also receive means-tested benefits which do have bank statement requirements. If you are claiming Universal Credit alongside PIP, see our guide on bank statements for Universal Credit for the savings threshold rules (£6,000 and £16,000 limits). For Council Tax Reduction, see bank statements for Council Tax Reduction.
Important: Receiving PIP can make you eligible for additional support — the disability premium in Universal Credit, a Council Tax exemption (severely mentally impaired), and in some cases a Blue Badge. Claiming PIP does not put your other benefits at risk.

Common questions
Does PIP check your bank statements?
PIP (Personal Independence Payment) is not means-tested — it is based on how your condition affects your daily life, not your income or savings. DWP does not routinely request bank statements as part of a PIP assessment. However, DWP can and does check financial records if fraud is suspected or during a compliance review. If you are also claiming Universal Credit or other means-tested benefits alongside PIP, those claims may be subject to separate financial checks.
Is PIP means-tested?
No. PIP is a non-means-tested benefit — your savings, income, and assets do not affect whether you qualify or how much you receive. You can claim PIP whether you are working or not, and regardless of how much you have in savings. This is a key difference from Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, and Council Tax Reduction, which are all means-tested.
Can DWP access my bank account for PIP?
DWP does not have automatic access to your bank account. However, they have legal powers under the Social Security Administration Act to request financial information from banks if they suspect fraud or are conducting a compliance check. This is relatively uncommon for PIP specifically, since it is not means-tested. If you receive a request, it will come in writing from the DWP Fraud Investigation Service.
Why would DWP ask for bank statements if PIP is not means-tested?
DWP may request bank statements for PIP claimants in specific circumstances: if they are investigating whether the claimant actually has the condition or limitations they claim (e.g. looking at travel or activity patterns), as part of a broader fraud investigation across multiple benefits, or if the bank statements are relevant to another benefit being claimed at the same time.
I've received a DWP compliance letter asking for bank statements — what do I do?
Respond promptly. Provide the statements requested and include a cover letter if any transactions need explaining — for example, a large deposit from a family member or a one-off income payment. If you believe the request is incorrect or you need more time, contact the DWP Fraud Compliance number on the letter. Ignoring compliance letters can result in benefit suspension.
Does PIP affect Universal Credit?
No — receiving PIP does not reduce your Universal Credit entitlement. In fact, if you receive the Daily Living component of PIP, you may qualify for the disabled worker element within Universal Credit, which increases your payment. PIP income is not counted as earnings or income for Universal Credit purposes.
What benefits alongside PIP are means-tested and do check bank statements?
Universal Credit, Housing Benefit (legacy), Council Tax Reduction, Pension Credit, and Income Support are all means-tested and may require bank statements. If you claim any of these alongside PIP, those claims are subject to savings and income checks. See our guides on bank statements for Universal Credit and Council Tax Reduction for the specific rules.
