Bank statement for a visa application
Visa officers use your bank statement to assess whether you can fund your trip, have stable income, and have genuine ties to your home country. Here is what they actually check, how many months you need, and how to prepare your statement correctly.
Requirements by visa type
| Visa | Months |
|---|---|
| UK Standard Visitor Visa | 3–6 months |
| Schengen Visa (EU) | 3 months |
| US B1/B2 Tourist Visa | 3–6 months |
| US F-1 Student Visa | 3–6 months |
| UK Student Visa | 28 days before application |
| Canada Visitor Visa (TRV) | 3–6 months |
| Australia Visitor Visa (600) | 3 months |
Requirements change. Always verify on the official embassy or consulate website before submitting.
What visa officers actually look for
Income consistency
Regular salary deposits show stable employment. Irregular or missing income months raise questions about your ability to fund travel and your ties to your home country.
Average balance
Officers look at the balance over 3 months, not just the final figure. A high balance that appeared recently (within 2–4 weeks of application) is treated with suspicion.
Unexplained large deposits
A sudden large transfer just before your application — from a friend, relative, or unidentified source — is a major red flag. Officers call this 'parking funds'.
Overdraft usage
Frequent overdraft use or a persistently negative balance suggests financial stress. Some countries disqualify applicants who have gone into overdraft within the statement period.
Outgoing commitments
Mortgage payments, loan repayments, and regular bills are assessed against your income to calculate disposable income — what you actually have available for travel.
Spending patterns
Very high discretionary spending relative to income may suggest you live beyond your means. Gambling transactions, in particular, draw attention from visa officers.
How to get an official bank statement for a visa
Visa applications require a formal bank-issued document — not a self-printed transaction list. Here are your options. For step-by-step instructions on downloading from specific banks, see our guide on how to get 3 months of bank statements.
Download from online banking
Log in → go to Statements or Documents → select the account → download PDFs for each month. Most banks make 12–24 months available. This is the fastest option and accepted by most embassies.
Request a printed statement from a branch
Visit your branch and ask for stamped printed statements. A bank stamp makes the document more authoritative and is strongly preferred for US, UK, and Schengen visa applications.
Request an official bank letter
For some visa categories (especially US and Canadian), a letter on bank letterhead confirming your account balance and history is accepted alongside or instead of monthly statements. Ask your bank's customer service to issue one.
Request by phone or secure message
If your bank doesn't show statements online, contact them by phone or through the secure messaging portal. Allow 5–10 working days for postal delivery.
Common mistakes that lead to visa refusal
Parking funds
Asking a relative to temporarily transfer money to inflate your balance. Officers see the source and date of transfers. If the funds came in within 4 weeks of your application and are not explained, it works against you.
Submitting a transaction export instead of an official statement
A printout from online banking or a CSV export is usually not accepted. The statement must be an official bank-issued PDF or stamped paper document showing your name, account number, and the bank's header.
Wrong date range
For UK Student Visa, the 28-day rule is strict: the statement must be dated within 31 days of your application and show the balance held for 28 consecutive days. For other visas, submitting statements that are too old (over 3–6 months) will result in rejection.
Including only one account
If your funds are split across multiple accounts (current + savings), submit statements for all of them. Officers add up the balances across all submitted accounts.
Submitting statements with visible correction or tampering
Any sign of digital editing — altered figures, mismatched fonts, or inconsistent formatting — triggers document fraud checks. Even innocent redactions in the wrong place can cause rejection.
Using a sponsor's bank statement
If a family member, employer, or other sponsor is funding your trip, you can submit their financial evidence instead of — or alongside — your own.
Sponsor's 3–6 months of bank statements
Signed sponsorship letter confirming they will cover your travel and accommodation costs
Proof of relationship (birth certificate, marriage certificate, employment contract)
Sponsor's proof of income (payslips, employment letter, tax returns)
Important
Do not redact your bank statement for a visa application
Redacting account numbers or personal details is appropriate when sharing with landlords or employers — but not for government visa applications. Embassies require the full statement to verify authenticity. Any redaction may be treated as document tampering.

Common questions
How many months of bank statements do I need for a visa?
Most visa categories require 3 months. Some — such as the US F-1 student visa or UK spouse visa — ask for up to 6 months. The UK Student Visa has a unique rule: the balance must be held for 28 consecutive days immediately before the application, proven by a statement dated within 31 days of submission. Always check the specific requirements for your destination country.
Does the bank statement need to be official or can I print it myself?
Most embassies and consulates require an official bank-issued statement — either a PDF downloaded from your bank's portal, a mailed paper statement, or a branch-printed copy stamped by a bank employee. A self-printed transaction export from online banking is usually not accepted, although some countries accept it if it clearly shows your name, account number, and the bank's branding.
What is the minimum bank balance required for a visa?
It varies significantly by country and visa type. The Schengen zone typically requires €50–€100 per day of travel. The UK Student Visa requires £1,334/month in London or £1,023/month outside London, held for 28 days. The US has no fixed minimum but expects you to demonstrate that you can fund the trip without working. Always check the official consulate website for your specific visa category.
Can I use my parents' or sponsor's bank statement for a visa?
Yes, in most cases. If a sponsor (parent, relative, employer) is funding your trip, submit their bank statements alongside a signed sponsorship letter confirming they will cover your costs. Some countries also require the sponsor's proof of income (payslips) and relationship to you (birth certificate for parents).
Should I redact my account number before submitting?
Generally no — visa officers need your full account number to verify the statement is genuine and to cross-reference with other documents. Do not redact anything from a visa application statement. Redaction is appropriate when sharing with landlords or employers, but not for official government applications.
What if my balance is too low for the visa requirements?
Wait until your balance genuinely meets the requirement — do not inflate it artificially. Consider submitting additional evidence: a letter from your employer confirming your salary, savings account statements, property ownership documents, or a sponsor's financial evidence. A strong overall financial profile can offset a borderline balance.
Can I submit bank statements in a foreign language?
Most embassies require statements in English or the official language of the destination country. If your statement is in another language, you will usually need to provide a certified translation alongside the original.
