How to Redact a Bank Statement (PDF and Paper)
Sharing your bank statement with a landlord, lender, or visa office doesn't mean handing over every sensitive detail. Here's exactly what to redact, what to keep, and the safest tools to do it.

Redact your full account number, routing number, and SSN — but leave your name, address, bank name, balances, and transaction history visible. Use Adobe Acrobat's Redact tool for PDFs, or a thick permanent marker + photocopy for paper. Never just draw a black box in an image editor — the text underneath can still be recovered.
What to redact
The goal of redaction is to remove information that could enable identity theft or financial fraud — without removing information the recipient actually needs to verify your finances.
| Redact this | Why it's risky |
|---|---|
| Full account number | Allows direct access or ACH fraud if combined with routing number |
| Routing number | Together with account number, enables unauthorized withdrawals |
| Social Security Number (SSN) | Appears on some statements — never share |
| Online banking username/password hints | Security questions or hints sometimes printed on statements |
| Other account numbers listed | Linked savings, investment, or loan accounts you're not sharing |
| Irrelevant personal transactions | Medical payments, donations, or other sensitive entries not relevant to the request |
What to leave visible
| Keep this visible | Why it's needed |
|---|---|
| Bank name and logo | Verifies which institution issued the statement |
| Statement period (date range) | Confirms how recent the document is |
| Your full name and address | Required to verify identity and proof of address |
| Opening and closing balance | Shows financial position — usually the main thing being reviewed |
| Transaction dates and amounts | Demonstrates income deposits, spending patterns, or cash flow |
| Last 4 digits of account number | Usually safe to leave — insufficient for fraud on its own |
How to redact a PDF bank statement
The critical rule: true redaction permanently removes the underlying text data. Simply placing a black rectangle over text in a PDF editor does not — the text still exists in the file and can be revealed by selecting and copying it.
Don't use Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Canva, or basic image editors to "cover" text with a black shape. The original text layer remains in the file. Anyone can uncover it by copying and pasting the document's text, or by removing the shape layer.

What to redact by situation
| Situation | Redact | Keep visible |
|---|---|---|
| Landlord / rental application | Full account number, routing number, SSN, unrelated personal transactions | Name, address, bank name, balances, income deposits, statement dates |
| Mortgage or loan application | SSN, routing number, linked account numbers not being disclosed | Everything else — lenders need a complete picture of income and cash flow |
| Visa application | Routing number, full account number (last 4 is fine), SSN | Name, bank name, balances, statement period, transaction history |
| Divorce / court proceedings | Very little — courts may require unredacted statements. Check with your attorney. | All financial data; partial redaction may be treated as non-compliance |
| Sharing with an accountant | Nothing required — accountants need full statements | Everything |
