Address Verification
Can a bank statement be used as proof of address?
Yes — a bank statement is one of the most widely accepted proof of address documents. But it only works if it meets specific requirements around age, format, and content. Here is what you need to know before submitting one.
What makes a bank statement valid for proof of address
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Your full name | Must match exactly the name on your ID or the application form. Nicknames or initials are usually rejected. |
| Your current address | Must show the address you are proving. PO Box addresses are almost universally rejected for address verification. |
| Bank name and branding | Must clearly show the issuing bank — header, logo, or name. A plain transaction export without bank branding is typically not accepted. |
| Issue date | Most organisations require the statement to be no older than 3 months. Some (e.g. HMRC, DVLA) accept up to 6 months. |
| Account number | Usually visible, though some recipients will accept statements with the account number partially redacted (last 4 digits visible). |
| Official format | Must be a bank-issued PDF or original paper statement — not a screenshot, transaction export, or self-printed list. |
Who accepts a bank statement as proof of address

| DVLA (UK driving licence) | Yes |

Requirements vary by organisation and change over time. Always check the specific requirements before submitting.
How to get a bank statement for proof of address
Download from online banking
Log in to your bank's website or app → go to Statements or Documents → download the most recent monthly statement as a PDF. This is the fastest option and accepted by most organisations.
Request from your bank branch
Visit a branch and ask for a printed, stamped statement. A bank stamp makes it more authoritative and is useful when the recipient is unfamiliar with digital PDFs.
Request by phone or secure message
If you cannot access online banking, call the number on the back of your card or send a secure message. Most banks can email a PDF or post a paper statement within 3–5 working days.
Make sure your address is up to date
The statement must show your current address. If you have recently moved, update your address with the bank first. Allow 3–5 working days before requesting a new statement — the old address may still appear on statements generated before the change.

Bank statement vs utility bill — which is better?
| Factor | Bank statement | Utility bill |
|---|---|---|
| Acceptance | Very wide | Very wide |
| Ease of access | Instant download from app or online banking | Monthly by post or from supplier portal |
| Date clarity | Always clearly dated | Sometimes estimated or delayed |
| Fraud resistance | Hard to falsify — transaction data verifiable | Easier to alter digitally |
| Digital renters (no utility bills) | ✓ Works | ✗ May not apply |
| New address (just moved) | Update bank first — takes 3–5 days | Update supplier first — takes longer |
In most cases, either will work. Use whichever you can access most quickly. If you have recently moved and neither reflects your new address yet, a signed tenancy agreement or council tax bill is the fastest alternative.
Should you redact anything before sharing?
For proof of address purposes, the recipient needs your name, address, bank name, and issue date — not necessarily your full account number or transaction details.
Safe to redact
- Full account number (keep last 4)
- Sort code / routing number
- Full transaction list (if only address is needed)
Do not redact
- Your full name
- Your current address
- Bank name and branding
- Statement date
Check first
- Balance figures
- Individual transactions
- National ID references

Common questions
How old can a bank statement be for proof of address?
Most organisations require a bank statement issued within the last 3 months. HMRC and some solicitors accept statements up to 6 months old. For visa applications, check the specific consulate's requirements — many require a statement dated within 3 months of your application date.
Does it need to be an original printed statement or is a PDF fine?
A PDF downloaded directly from your bank's online banking portal is accepted by most organisations. What is not accepted is a screenshot, a transaction export (CSV or plain text), or a self-printed list without bank branding. Some solicitors and financial institutions request a certified copy or an original paper statement — check before submitting.
Can I use a bank statement if my address is not registered with the bank?
No — if the statement shows a different address than the one you are trying to prove, it will be rejected. Update your address with your bank first, then request a new statement after the change has been processed (usually 3–5 working days for the address to appear on a new statement).
Can I redact my account number on a proof of address statement?
It depends on the recipient. Many organisations — landlords, councils, and some solicitors — will accept a statement with the full account number redacted down to the last 4 digits. However, banks, financial institutions, and AML-regulated businesses typically require the full account number visible. Check before redacting.
Is a bank statement better than a utility bill for proof of address?
Both are equally accepted by most organisations. Bank statements are often preferred because they are more reliably dated and harder to falsify. Utility bills work well if you do not have a recent bank statement. Some organisations specifically list both as options — either will do.
What if I don't have a bank statement at my current address?
Alternatives include: a council tax bill, HMRC letter, utility bill (gas, electricity, water), tenancy agreement, or a letter from a government authority. If you have recently moved, a signed letter from your landlord confirming your address is accepted by some organisations as a supplement.
Can I use an online bank statement from a digital bank like Monzo or Revolut?
Yes — digital bank statements (Monzo, Revolut, Starling, Chime) are accepted by most organisations in the same way as traditional bank statements, provided they show your name, address, the bank's branding, and the issue date. Some older institutions may be unfamiliar with the format — if rejected, download the PDF from the app and try again or contact the recipient.
