How to Convert PDF to Google Sheets (4 Methods)

You can convert any PDF to Google Sheets in under two minutes using Google Drive's built-in OCR, the Sheets native import, Gemini AI, or a free online PDF converter. The right method depends on whether your PDF is text-based or scanned, and how complex the table layout is.

Fastest method (free, no signup)
  1. Upload the PDF to Google Drive
  2. Right-click → Open with → Google Docs (runs OCR)
  3. Copy the table from the Doc
  4. Paste into a Google Sheets spreadsheet

For bank statements or complex financial PDFs, see Method 3 below — dedicated tools give cleaner column structure.

4 ways to convert PDF to Google Sheets

1
Google Drive OCR (free, built-in)
2 minBest for: Scanned PDFs with clear text
  1. Upload the PDF to Google Drive (drag-and-drop or + New → File upload)
  2. Right-click the file → "Open with" → "Google Docs"
  3. Google Drive converts the PDF to a Google Doc using OCR — text is now editable
  4. In Google Docs: File → Download → CSV, then import that CSV into Google Sheets
  5. Or: copy the table from the Doc and paste it directly into Sheets

Note: Works well for text-based PDFs. Tables with merged cells or complex layouts may need cleanup after import.

2
Google Sheets native import
1 minBest for: Simple single-column or text PDFs
  1. Open a new Google Sheets spreadsheet
  2. File → Import → Upload → select your PDF
  3. Google Sheets will attempt to parse columns automatically
  4. Choose 'Replace spreadsheet' or 'Insert new sheet', then click Import

Note: Native Sheets import works best for simple PDFs. Complex tables with borders often import better via the Drive OCR method above.

3
Free online converter (mybankstatementanalysis.com)
30 secBest for: Bank statements, financial PDFs with transaction tables
  1. Go to mybankstatementanalysis.com/pdf-to-google-sheets
  2. Upload your PDF — drag-and-drop or click to browse
  3. The AI extracts all tables and transaction data
  4. Download as CSV, then open in Google Sheets (File → Import)
  5. Or use the direct Google Sheets export button if available

Note: Best results for financial PDFs with structured transaction data — bank statements, credit card statements, invoices.

4
Gemini AI in Google Workspace
3 minBest for: Complex layouts, when you need column normalization
  1. Open Google Sheets and click the Gemini icon (sparkle) in the top-right corner
  2. Type: 'I have a PDF I want to put into a table. I'll paste the content.'
  3. Open the PDF in Drive as a Google Doc (method 1 step 1–2), then copy all the text
  4. Paste the text into the Gemini sidebar and ask it to structure it into columns
  5. Gemini will generate a structured table — click Insert to add it to your sheet

Note: Best for PDFs where column headers aren't obvious or data needs renaming and normalization.

Converting a bank statement PDF to Google Sheets

Bank statement PDFs have a few quirks that make generic PDF converters struggle:

A purpose-built tool handles these automatically. The PDF to Google Sheets converter on this site was built specifically for financial PDFs — it normalizes dates, parses transaction descriptions, and keeps the balance column aligned. You can also analyze the bank statement directly for spending insights before exporting.

Tips for cleaner imports

Unlock before converting
If the PDF requires a password to open, enter it in your PDF viewer first. Then save a new copy (File → Print → Save as PDF) — this removes the password from the file. Try to import the unlocked copy.
Split very long statements
For PDFs with 12+ months of transactions, split into quarters first (use Adobe Acrobat, ilovepdf.com, or Smallpdf). Smaller files import more reliably and column detection is more accurate.
Check for text vs. image PDFs
Open the PDF and try to highlight text. If you can highlight and copy text, it's a text-based PDF and imports cleanly. If you can't select anything, it's image-based and needs OCR first.
Use CSV as an intermediate
Most converters output CSV, not a native Sheets file. Import the CSV via File → Import in Google Sheets. On the import dialog, set Separator type to Comma and choose whether to replace or append.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a PDF to Google Sheets for free?
The fastest free method: upload the PDF to Google Drive, right-click → Open with Google Docs. This runs OCR on the PDF. Then copy the table from the Doc and paste into Google Sheets, or download as CSV and import. No paid tools required.
Can Google Sheets open a PDF directly?
Not perfectly. Google Sheets' built-in File → Import can open a PDF, but results vary — simple single-column PDFs import well; complex tables with borders often need manual cleanup. For best results, route through Google Drive OCR (open PDF as Google Docs, then export as CSV).
How do I convert a bank statement PDF to Google Sheets?
The easiest method for bank statements: use a dedicated tool like mybankstatementanalysis.com/pdf-to-google-sheets. Upload the PDF, and the AI extracts the transaction table. Download the CSV and import it into Google Sheets via File → Import. This handles password-protected PDFs, multi-page statements, and mixed formats better than Google Drive OCR.
Why does my PDF look garbled when I import it to Google Sheets?
This usually happens when the PDF is image-based (a scanned document) rather than text-based. If the PDF was created by scanning a physical document, Google Sheets can't read the text directly — it needs OCR. Open the PDF as a Google Doc (Drive OCR) first, or use a dedicated OCR tool, then copy the extracted text into Sheets.
Can I convert a password-protected PDF to Google Sheets?
Not directly — you need to unlock the PDF first. Most bank statement PDFs use a date-of-birth or account number as the password. Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Reader or any PDF viewer, enter the password, then 'Print' to a new PDF (which removes the password). You can then import the unlocked PDF into Google Sheets.
What is the best way to extract a table from a PDF into Google Sheets?
For financial tables: a dedicated PDF extraction tool (like the one at mybankstatementanalysis.com/extract-table-from-pdf) gives the cleanest result because it understands the column structure of financial documents. For general tables: Google Drive OCR works well — open as Google Docs, copy the table, paste into Sheets.
Does Google Sheets import preserve the formatting from the PDF?
No — Google Sheets import converts PDF content into plain data. Fonts, colors, cell borders, and merged cells from the PDF are not preserved. You're getting the data, not the visual design. If you need to preserve layout, keep a copy of the original PDF alongside the Sheets version.
