What does a Cash App charge mean?

Cash App is a peer-to-peer payment service owned by Block (formerly Square). When you see CASH APP on your bank statement, money moved between your bank account and Cash App — but the bank only sees the bank-to-Cash-App leg. The recipient detail (the $cashtag or merchant name) lives in the Cash App.

Cash App handles four main transaction types: peer-to-peer transfers between $cashtags, Cash App Card purchases at merchants, Bitcoin and stock purchases, and balance top-ups or cashouts to your linked bank. Each shows up on your bank statement with a slightly different descriptor.

How to find a Cash App transaction

1
Open Cash App and tap Activity
The clock icon at the bottom shows every transaction with the $cashtag, name, amount, and date.
2
Match the bank statement amount and date
Find the Cash App entry that matches the bank line. Tap it to see the full detail and any note attached.
3
Check Cash App Card transactions if you have the card
Card → Statements lists every Cash App Card purchase by merchant and date — useful for tracing what looks like a peer payment but is actually a card swipe.
4
Request a refund if you sent money to the wrong person
Tap the transaction and Request Refund. The recipient has to approve it. There is no automatic recall of peer-to-peer payments.
5
Dispute or call support if unauthorized
Tap the menu (•••) on the transaction → Need Help & Cash App Support → Dispute. If Cash App will not refund, chargeback through your bank within 60 days.

Frequently asked questions

What does CASH APP mean on my bank statement?
A CASH APP line on your bank statement means money moved between your bank account and Cash App. It could be a peer-to-peer payment to someone with a $cashtag, a transfer to top up your Cash App balance, a payout from Cash App to your bank, or a Bitcoin purchase or merchant payment through Cash App. The full transaction detail lives in the Cash App, not the bank statement.
What is SQ *CASH APP on my bank statement?
SQ stands for Square, the parent company of Cash App. When you send or receive money through Cash App, the transaction is processed on Square's payment rails, so the bank descriptor often reads 'SQ *CASH APP' or just 'SQ *' followed by the recipient. SQ and CASH APP charges from your account are the same payment system.
Why do I have a Cash App charge I do not recognize?
Common reasons: a friend request you accepted accidentally; an in-app purchase or auto-reload you forgot you set up; a Cash App Card purchase by you or a family member; or someone with access to your phone using the app. Open Cash App, tap the clock icon (Activity) and find the transaction with the matching amount and date to see the recipient.
How do I find who I paid through Cash App?
Open Cash App, tap the Activity tab (clock icon at the bottom), and find the transaction that matches the date and amount on your bank statement. Each entry shows the recipient's $cashtag, name, date, and any note. You can also export your transaction history from cash.app/account on the web.
How do I cancel a recurring Cash App charge?
Cash App does not have traditional recurring billing for peer-to-peer payments, so 'recurring' charges usually come from a Cash App Card transaction with a merchant subscription. Open Cash App → Cash Card → Linked Subscriptions to manage them. For one-off mistakes, tap the transaction and request a refund from the recipient — they have to approve it.
Can I dispute a Cash App charge?
Yes. Open the transaction in Cash App, tap the menu (•••), and select Need Help & Cash App Support → Dispute this Transaction. Cash App reviews disputes for fraud and merchant issues but generally does not refund peer-to-peer payments to the wrong person — those require asking the recipient. If Cash App rejects the dispute, file a chargeback with your bank within 60 days.
Why is Cash App on my statement when I never use it?
Either someone with access to your card or bank info opened a Cash App account using your details, or your card information was added to a stranger's Cash App. Call Cash App at 1-800-969-1940, ask whether an account is tied to your bank or card, then dispute the charge with your bank and consider freezing or replacing the card.
