Why bank statement PDFs need a specialized converter

Bank statement PDFs are structurally different from most documents. A generic PDF-to-Excel tool doesn't understand them — here's why.

Multi-column table layouts
Most banks print transactions in 3–5 column tables. Generic converters extract these as unstructured text, losing the relationship between date, description, and amount.
Separate debit/credit columns
Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and others put withdrawals and deposits in separate columns. A standard converter can't merge these into signed amounts without understanding the layout.
Scanned image PDFs
Paper statements photographed or faxed become image PDFs with no extractable text. Generic converters return empty spreadsheets. Our OCR reads them like text.
Varied date formats
Chase uses MM/DD, some banks use Jan 01, others use 01-01-2025. We normalize all date formats to a consistent MM/DD so your spreadsheet sorts correctly.
Running balance columns
Wells Fargo includes a running balance after each transaction. Generic tools include this as an "amount" column, corrupting your totals. We exclude it.
Multi-page statements
A 3-month statement might span 9 pages with repeated headers. Generic converters repeat header rows as data. We strip headers and output clean transaction rows only.

What's inside a bank statement PDF

A bank statement PDF typically contains several sections. Our converter focuses exclusively on the transaction history — the part that's useful for analysis.

Account summary
Account number, statement period, opening balance, closing balance, total deposits, total withdrawals.
Not included in Excel export — used internally to validate extraction accuracy.

Transaction history
Every debit and credit in the statement period — date, merchant description, and amount.
This is the core of the export. Every row becomes one row in your Excel file.

Check images
Scanned images of any paper checks that cleared during the period.
Images are skipped — only the transaction metadata (amount, date) is captured.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of PDF can I convert to Excel?
This converter is built specifically for bank statement PDFs — whether downloaded from your bank's website (text-based) or scanned from paper (image-based). For generic non-financial PDFs, a general PDF converter would work better.
How is this different from a regular PDF to Excel converter?
A standard PDF-to-Excel tool just dumps raw text into cells — no structure, no categories, dates and amounts mixed up. Our converter understands bank statement layouts: it identifies each transaction, normalizes the format, and adds a spending category to every row. You get a properly formatted spreadsheet, not a mess.
Which banks are supported?
Any bank worldwide that provides PDF statements: Chase, Barclays, HSBC, Deutsche Bank, BNP Paribas, ING, Santander, HDFC Bank, and 10,000+ banks worldwide.
Is it really free?
Yes. Up to 3 pages per month with no account needed. Most single-month bank statements fit in 3 pages. Paid plans are available for larger volumes.
Is my PDF secure?
Your PDF is processed entirely in memory and discarded immediately after conversion. It is never stored on our servers.
What columns does the Excel file contain?
Date, Description (merchant name exactly as on your statement), Amount (positive for credits, negative for debits), and Category (AI-assigned: Groceries, Transport, Subscriptions, etc.). All 19 spending categories are included.
