If the password still doesn't work
- Verify the DDMMYYYY format — 8 digits, leading zeros for single-digit days/months, no separators
- Check the DOB on file at the bank matches your Aadhaar / PAN (log in to the bank's app → Profile)
- For joint accounts, use the primary account holder's DOB
- For HDFC, never use DOB — always use Customer ID from the app or welcome kit
- For SBI, confirm the source — YONO = DOB, Net Banking = account number
- Call the bank's customer care (numbers in the table) with Aadhaar / PAN to verify and request a fresh statement

What is the password format for most Indian bank statement PDFs?
Most Indian banks use the account holder's date of birth in DDMMYYYY format — eight digits with no spaces, slashes, or hyphens. For example, DOB 15 August 1990 becomes 15081990. Exceptions are HDFC (uses Customer ID), SBI (depends on source), HSBC India, and Citi India, which use a combination of surname letters and DOB digits.
Why does HDFC use a different password format?
HDFC chose Customer ID over DOB because it's not on social media, not shared with joint holders, and less guessable. The tradeoff is user confusion — HDFC is consistently the most-asked Indian bank in password queries because it breaks the DDMMYYYY pattern every other private bank follows.
What is the password for a Citi India statement (now part of Axis)?
Citibank sold its India retail banking business to Axis in 2023. Legacy Citi India e-statements still use the Citi format: first 4 letters of surname + DDMM of DOB (example: surname 'Kumar', DOB 15 Aug → kuma1508). After migration to Axis, new statements follow Axis format (DOB DDMMYYYY).
Can I remove the password from my Indian bank statement PDF?
Yes. Open the PDF with the correct password in Adobe Reader, Preview (Mac), or a Chrome tab. Then use File → Print → Save as PDF to create an unlocked copy. This is safe to do and doesn't alter the statement data — it only removes the password wrapper. Many people do this so they don't have to re-enter the password every time they open the file.
What if my Indian bank statement password doesn't work?
First confirm the format: DDMMYYYY with exactly eight digits, no separators. Then check that the DOB on file at the bank matches your Aadhaar — this is a common mismatch. For HDFC, verify your Customer ID in the app (not DOB). For SBI, confirm which source the PDF came from — YONO uses DOB, Net Banking uses account number. Are statements downloaded from mobile apps password-protected too?
Yes, in most cases. Even when you download directly to your device through the bank's app (HDFC, YES, ICICI, Axis, Kotak, SBI YONO), the resulting PDF is encrypted with the same password format. This is for security if the file is later shared, emailed, or left on shared devices.
How do I know which bank sent the statement if I have multiple accounts?
Check the email sender address, the PDF filename (usually contains bank code), or the first page header before the content is obscured. For PDFs downloaded from apps, the filename usually includes the bank name. Once you know the source, match it to the table above for the correct password format.
