Most Indian banks use the account holder's date of birth in DDMMYYYY format — eight digits with no spaces, slashes, or hyphens. For example, DOB 15 August 1990 becomes 15081990. Exceptions are HDFC (uses Customer ID), SBI (depends on source), HSBC India, and Citi India, which use a combination of surname letters and DOB digits.

Why does HDFC use a different password format?

HDFC chose Customer ID over DOB because it's not on social media, not shared with joint holders, and less guessable. The tradeoff is user confusion — HDFC is consistently the most-asked Indian bank in password queries because it breaks the DDMMYYYY pattern every other private bank follows.

What is the password for a Citi India statement (now part of Axis)?

Citibank sold its India retail banking business to Axis in 2023. Legacy Citi India e-statements still use the Citi format: first 4 letters of surname + DDMM of DOB (example: surname 'Kumar', DOB 15 Aug → kuma1508). After migration to Axis, new statements follow Axis format (DOB DDMMYYYY).

Can I remove the password from my Indian bank statement PDF?

Yes. Open the PDF with the correct password in Adobe Reader, Preview (Mac), or a Chrome tab. Then use File → Print → Save as PDF to create an unlocked copy. This is safe to do and doesn't alter the statement data — it only removes the password wrapper. Many people do this so they don't have to re-enter the password every time they open the file.

Password formats explained

Format A — DOB in DDMMYYYY

Used by most private and PSU banks. Eight digits: two-digit day + two-digit month + four-digit year. No separators. Example: DOB 15 Aug 1990 → 15081990.

Format B — Customer ID

Format C — Account number (SBI Net Banking)

Format D — Surname letters + DDMM

Used by HSBC India, legacy Citi India, and some SBI Credit Card statements. First 4 letters of surname (uppercase for HSBC, lowercase for Citi) + DDMM of DOB. Example: surname "Sharma", DOB 15 Aug → SHAR1508 (HSBC) or shar1508 (Citi).

How to unlock any Indian bank PDF

3Open the PDF in Adobe Reader, Preview (Mac), or a Chrome tab
4Type the password (DDMMYYYY for most banks, Customer ID for HDFC, etc.)
