Password formats explained

Format A — DOB in DDMMYYYY

Used by most private and PSU banks. Eight digits: two-digit day + two-digit month + four-digit year. No separators. Example: DOB 15 Aug 1990 → 15081990.

Format B — Customer ID

Used by HDFC Bank. Your 8 or 10-digit Customer ID (User ID). Find it in the HDFC Mobile app (My Profile), NetBanking dashboard, welcome kit, or on any previous statement. See the full HDFC password guide.

Format C — Account number (SBI Net Banking)

Only for SBI statements downloaded from OnlineSBI Net Banking. The password is your full 11-digit account number (no spaces). SBI YONO app uses DOB DDMMYYYY instead. See the SBI password guide for all three SBI formats.

Format D — Surname letters + DDMM

Used by HSBC India, legacy Citi India, and some SBI Credit Card statements. First 4 letters of surname (uppercase for HSBC, lowercase for Citi) + DDMM of DOB. Example: surname "Sharma", DOB 15 Aug → SHAR1508 (HSBC) or shar1508 (Citi).

How to unlock any Indian bank PDF

  1. 1Identify the bank from the email sender, PDF filename, or first-page header
  2. 2Look up the password format in the table above
  3. 3Open the PDF in Adobe Reader, Preview (Mac), or a Chrome tab
  4. 4Type the password (DDMMYYYY for most banks, Customer ID for HDFC, etc.)
  5. 5If you want to remove the password permanently: File → Print → Save as PDF. The re-saved file opens without a password.

If the password still doesn't work

  • Verify the DDMMYYYY format — 8 digits, leading zeros for single-digit days/months, no separators
  • Check the DOB on file at the bank matches your Aadhaar / PAN (log in to the bank's app → Profile)
  • For joint accounts, use the primary account holder's DOB
  • For HDFC, never use DOB — always use Customer ID from the app or welcome kit
  • For SBI, confirm the source — YONO = DOB, Net Banking = account number
  • Call the bank's customer care (numbers in the table) with Aadhaar / PAN to verify and request a fresh statement

Don't want to type the password every time you open the file? Remove it permanently with our free tool — runs in your browser, the file never leaves your device.

After unlocking, upload the PDF to our free bank statement analyzer — it categorizes UPI, NEFT, and IMPS lines automatically. For narration decoding see the UPI / NEFT / IMPS guide.

For accountants and CAs: once the PDF is unlocked, you can convert it directly to a Tally-ready CSV for Tally Prime or Tally ERP 9 — Bank Reconciliation → Alt+O imports it in one step. Skips the manual data-entry stage entirely.
